Here you will find the Class Syllabus and Operational Items for this school year. In order to keep Open House interactive and quick, I want parents to read this information and come in with questions. This way we can have more conversations and LESS LECTURING.

1. How can I contact you?
Feel free to talk with me BEFORE and AFTER school to have brief discussions about “notifications” (i.e. doctor appointments, birthday celebrations, absences, or school events). If you have personal concerns about student progress we can set up a separate conference time to discuss.

2. What should be in my child’s backpack DAILY?
Bring lunch: Write your child’s name on their lunch/lunchbox. Students will leave their lunch in their
backpack.

Rules: As a class, the students create rules for our classroom community on the first day of school.
The Angier Way:

Honor Others: Be kind to others Honor Achievement: Always do your best
Consequences: Students who do not honor these Classroom Expectations will go through the following steps:

Hard work, participation, helping others, and following rules is a reward in its self. However, I do believe students should be recognized for their above and beyond efforts.
Group Rewards: As a class we can earn parties based on our collaboration and cooperation. When we fill our Noodle Jar we will have a classroom party! There will also be FUN FRIDAY every week. Students that finish all class and home assignments as well as use respectful behavior will be able to attend FUN FRIDAY!
Individual rewards: Each student will have a treasure map. Every day student has an opportunity to receive a sticker for a successful day of work and turning in assignments. When the treasure map is full they can pick a prize from the “Treasure Chest.”

2. What should be in my child’s backpack DAILY?
- Snack: Healthy choices for snacks would be fruits, vegetables, crackers, juice, water, etc. Please do not send a sweet or sticky snack. Snacks and lunches will be kept in their backpacks.
- Lunch:
Bring lunch: Write your child’s name on their lunch/lunchbox. Students will leave their lunch in their
backpack.
- Daily Folder (RED): Students will take out their folder before walking into class. This folder will be used for HOME TO SCHOOL COMMUNICATION. The folder MUST be returned everyday! Please check the folder every day for important handouts from the school or me. If you have a note for me, place this inside the folder as well.
3. How can I volunteer in the classroom?

- You will need a Tuberculosis (TB) skin test and clearance forms from the office. Please know that this pre-screening is in the place for the safety of all the children at Angier.
- Keep your child at home if she/he has a temperature/illness (100+ fever, throwing up, pink eye, lice, etc.)—Coughing, runny nose, and tummy aches are Miss A-OK!
- Call the school Office to report your child’s absence. If you are not able to contact the school, send a note with the student explaining the absence when he/she feels better.
- Preventative Care: Take your child to regular physical and dental check-ups. Make sure Children get need 8 to 10 hours of sleep and healthy eating!
4. What do I need to know about homework?
Homework = Dedication, Discipline, and Practice
- Every week students will receive homework on Thursday and are expected to complete and turn it in on Wednesday. *You will have the weekend to work on homework!!
- Homework Journal: 2 full pages that include=short responses to 5 questions/ assignments, artwork, and nightly reading. **5 PERFECT (15/15) homework journals will receive a “homework pass” and will be excused from a week of homework journal.**
- Reading: Students are recommended to read 20-30 minutes every night with an adult or TO an adult. Raz-kids and EPIC! are great online options for students to read at their appropriate reading level.
- Poetry Homework: This is a home/school assignment. Students will receive a new poem on Monday. Their job is to memorize and recite the poem by memory. On Friday students will perform the poem in front of the class during “Poetry Tea”.
- Projects: Throughout the year, we will have special projects that relate to our curriculum in 2nd grade. Students will be required to research, create, and present their project.

- Warning: Name on the board. Students have an opportunity to erase their name based on their efforts to stay on task, participate in discussions, and abide by the Classroom Expectations
- Check next to their name: The student misses recess and considers their actions. They will miss FUN FRIDAY and have a one-on-one discussion with me explaining their behavior: Why it happened? How will they prevent it from happening?
- 2 checks next to their name: Lose Fun Friday and Recess and a phone call home or a
- referral if serious enough.

6. What’s the schedule?
- Regular school hours are 9:10am to 3:35pm (M, T, TH, F)
- Minimum Days are on Wednesday and Dismissal is at 1:00pm.
- You may drop your child off at 8:45am and he/she may eat breakfast in the auditorium. Afterwards, he/she will go to Walking Club on the dirt field. ***You may join your student! NO STUDENTS IN THE HALLWAY.
- The bell rings at 9:05am……..FREEZE…..when you are dismissed, walk to line up. Hang up your backpack and have your RED class folder in your hands ready to go!
- ***Please ARRIVE to school ON TIME and PICK UP your student PROMPTLY at the end of school. You may pick up your student at the Flag pole….NOT Room 21.
